Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature

Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature

The Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature organization is an independent 501(c)3 that manages the Iowa City area’s designation as a UNESCO City of Literature. Iowa City was designated in 2008 as the third City of Literature, and is now one of two in the U.S. and 53 worldwide. Cities of Literature are a part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network, which includes 350 cities. The organization promotes Iowa City’s literary culture and heritage through a mix of advocacy, networking, and programming. These programs include the Iowa City Book Festival, which will be held Oct. 13-20, 2024, as well as the One Book Two Book Children’s Literature Festival, and MusicIC: Where Music and Literature Meet. Through this organization, Iowa City connects to the other cities in the network, participating in collaborative projects, learning best practices, and sharing more about our writers, stores, libraries, and educational programs.
